The Maryland State Council is the leadership and administrative body that oversees all local councils within the state of Maryland. Our purpose is to coordinate, support, and strengthen the work of local councils so the Order’s mission is carried out effectively at scale.

Below is a breakdown of our core functions.

Leadership & Governance

The Maryland State Council provides overall direction for the Knights of Columbus within the state. This includes:

  • Setting statewide priorities and initiatives
  • Ensuring councils operate in harmony with Supreme Council policies
  • Providing leadership training for Grand Knights, District Deputies, and other officers
  • Organizing statewide meetings, conventions, and mid‑year leadership sessions

See our Resources Page for more information on this.

Program Coordination

The Maryland State Council implements and promotes the Faith in Action programs across the state:

  • Faith (spiritual growth, parish support)
  • Family (family activities, community-building)
  • Community (charity, service, outreach)
  • Life (pro-life initiatives, support for mothers and families)

We provide program guides, training, statewide events, and recognition for councils that excel (e.g., Star Council Awards).

Communication & Support

The Maryland State Council acts as the communication bridge between:

  • Supreme Council
  • District Deputies
  • Local councils
  • Parishes and dioceses

We distribute:

  • State Deputy messages
  • Chaplain messages
  • Administrative updates
  • Forms, deadlines, and compliance requirements
  • Safe Environment Program information

Membership Growth & Retention

The Maryland State Council leads statewide membership efforts:

  • Recruitment campaigns
  • Exemplification schedules
  • Training for membership directors
  • Public relations and outreach

Charitable Coordination

The Maryland State Council often runs or oversees:

  • Statewide charitable drives
  • Disaster relief efforts
  • Partnerships with diocesan or statewide charities
  • Fundraising campaigns

Annual State Convention

Every year, the Maryland State Council hosts a convention where:

  • Delegates from every council vote on resolutions
  • Officers are elected
  • Program awards are presented
  • The direction for the coming year is set

The Maryland State Council exists to ensure that every council in the state is supported, unified, and empowered to live out the Knights’ mission of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. It is the backbone of statewide coordination, leadership, and growth.
